Architecture as Rule: From Module to Environment

This foundational design studio approached architecture not as a finished form, but as a system of rules that generates space. Students defined a repeatable module and explored how patterns and spatial structures emerged by adjusting variables such as density, spacing, rotation, direction, and height. They then applied the same module and repetition rule to both a specific site on the Hanyang University ERICA campus and an extreme environmental condition, developing two distinct pavilions. Through this process, students examined how light, wind, circulation, and views could transform a shared generative principle into different architectural outcomes, while learning to establish and test design rules through sketches, physical models, and drawings.

Here and Now: Architecture as Social Inquiry

This graduation design studio began with a commitment to engage the society of the here and now through architecture, seeking out possibilities for small but meaningful change. The nine participating students each took the initiative to identify pressing social and spatial issues, and to select sites whose particular sense of place resonated with those concerns — thereby establishing the starting point of their own design inquiries. Drawing on their individual perspectives, imagination, and technical understanding, they then developed their ideas into concrete proposals and experienced the full process by which a concept takes form as built architecture.

Architectural Prompts: Designing Through Words

This foundational design studio began from the premise that architectural language is not merely a means of communication, but a generative prompt for shaping space and form. Working with operative terms such as Expand, Extrude, Inflate, Twist, Split, and Merge, students used these words as both starting points and catalysts — testing how abstract concepts translate into concrete spatial outcomes. In the first half of the semester, they applied selected terms incrementally to basic geometries, building their own vocabulary of architectural language. In the second half, they deployed that vocabulary in the design of a single-family house on a real site, experiencing first-hand how clear design thinking takes shape as persuasive, inhabitable architecture.

The Edge of Space: Investigating Architectural Boundaries

This foundational design studio began by reframing boundary not as a device for dividing space, but as the element that shapes how space is experienced. Students moved through three stages — Observation, Formation, and Contextualization — first documenting boundaries in everyday surroundings, then constructing a 100m³ pavilion of spatial experimentation, and finally adapting it to a specific site and program. Working entirely by hand throughout, they came to understand boundary as an active architectural language that defines and transforms space, rather than merely separating it.

Concepts into Space: Brand Philosophy as Architecture

This design studio began with a fundamental question — how can abstract concepts be made concrete in built space? — and pursued it through the design of an office building grounded in brand philosophy. Drawing on Rem Koolhaas's Elements of Architecture, students first analyzed how primary architectural components — walls, stairs, doors, ceilings, windows, floors, and columns — can embody specific ideas. They then translated the values of a chosen brand into spatial form on a real site in Gasan Digital Complex, manipulating and transforming these elements in response to context. Through this process, students came to understand space not as a passive physical environment, but as an active medium that communicates meaning and shapes user behavior.

House on Seongsu: Reading the Site

This design studio focused on designing a single-family house on a real site in Seongsu-dong, Seoul. Students began by documenting the rapidly transforming neighborhood through photographs and diagrams, then translated their site-specific findings into individual architectural concepts. They closely read the orientation, views, accessibility, and surrounding context of the site, responding to those conditions through massing, entry sequence, and a façade that engages the street. By each defining their own resident and +α program, students developed the house beyond a mere dwelling unit into an architectural proposal that introduces a small but meaningful shift to its neighborhood.

Inside, Outside, In-Between

This design studio explored the relationship between interior and exterior space through the medium of a single-family house. Beyond simply arranging bedrooms, living rooms, and kitchens, students considered how outdoor elements such as courtyards, terraces, and balconies enter into the rhythms of daily life. Circulation was treated not as mere movement but as a spatial sequence connecting room to room and inside to outside, while the addition of an +α program brought the threshold between private and semi-public space into the heart of the design discussion. Through this process, students came to understand the house not as a closed container but as a spatial system in which interior and exterior breathe together.

TACTIC CITY: Production for Urban Living

This graduate design studio explores Productive Living — a new housing typology in which dwelling and small-scale production are interwoven within the urban fabric. Set in Daegu's Jung-gu, the studio confronts a city facing population decline, the disappearance of small multifunctional buildings that once hybridized making, selling, and living, and the encroachment of large apartment complexes. Drawing on historic typologies of urban commercial housing and the global shift toward micro-production, students engaged four themes — Part-time Living, Urban Fabric & Urban Commercial Housing, Production Living, and Experiments — to reimagine the apartment as a productive, circular, and community-driven infrastructure for contemporary urban life.

Pavilion as Architectural Thought

This design studio used the pavilion as a medium for thinking and experimenting with the essential elements of architecture — space, structure, material, and light — in their purest form. Within a limited volume of 250m³ and unbound by any specific program, students proposed structures grounded in human scale that could invite and shape inhabitation. They then tested the same structure on a real urban rooftop, experiencing first-hand how an initially abstract idea is transformed and re-articulated when placed within a concrete context. Through this process, students examined for themselves the relationship between form and function, and the resilience of an architectural idea when it meets the real world.

RE-REMODELING

This graduate design studio investigates the act of RE-REMODELING — remodeling a building that has already been remodeled once before. Focused on the Anyang Museum and Kim Chung-up Architecture Museum, itself the product of an earlier remodeling, students engaged four questions: what constitutes originality, what should be conserved, what must be changed, and how much re-remodeling is appropriate. Through five analytical phases — Surveying, Inventorying, Units of Building Materials, Build, and Drawing — the studio negotiated tangible and intangible conditions, proposing interventions where the legacy of Korean modern architecture meets contemporary use.

The House and Its Tectonics

This design studio investigated how architectural concepts become physically realized through material and structure, using the design of a single-family house as its vehicle. Beginning with their own concepts derived from site analysis in Seongsu-dong, students were challenged to carry their ideas consistently from form into the structural system that enables it and the material that gives it surface. Through 1:50 detail models, they tested how plan and section translate into actual space via the thickness of material and the logic of construction. In doing so, students came to understand that concept, form, structure, and material are not separate decisions but a single, mutually reinforcing act of architectural thinking.

PRODUCTIVE LIFE; Housing + α

This graduate design studio explores Productive Life — a new typology of collective housing tailored to the Gasan Digital Complex (G-Valley), an area that has evolved from Korea's first inland industrial complex into a dense agglomeration of knowledge industries and apartment-type factories. Confronting a district where work has overwhelmed dwelling and commuters far outnumber residents, the studio reframes housing as an integral part of a productive urban ecosystem. Through themes such as the threshold between private and public, flexibility, the new space of technology, and urban ecology, students proposed alternative housing models in which living, working, and producing coexist within a single architectural framework.

From Object to Place: A Pavilion's Journey

This design studio unfolded as a two-stage journey, moving from a state of no site at all to a real site at the heart of the city. In Phase 1, students designed a pavilion within a 250m³ volume free of any external constraint; in Phase 2, they relocated it onto the rooftop of one of three historic urban buildings — Sewoon Sangga, the former Seoul City Hall, or the old Seoul Station. Witnessing how a self-contained object becomes architecture only when it encounters a place, students came to understand that architecture is not merely the making of form, but the design of form's relationship to place.

(EXTRA)ORDINARY
: Re-Inventing Urban Supermarket Landscape

This graduate design studio focused on Sun Plaza, a 1982 commercial building in Yeongdeungpo designed by Kim Chung-up, proposing new possibilities for the urban supermarket as a contemporary spatial landscape. Guided by three questions — what should be conserved, what must be changed, and how new interventions should be made (in)visible — students moved through five rigorous analytical phases: Surveying, Inventorying, Units of Building Materials, Build, and Drawing. In doing so, they reimagined the supermarket as an (extra)ordinary urban landscape where the legacy of Korean modern architecture meets the demands of contemporary use, testing the possibilities of adaptive reuse.

House Plus: Reimagining Domestic Programs

This design studio investigated new formats for contemporary dwelling through the brief of "house + α." Students developed concrete scenarios for their imagined residents — what kind of daily life they lead, and what additional program (such as a studio, café, gallery, or shared space) they wish to integrate into their living environment. Set against the shifting context of Seongsu-dong, they proposed houses that move beyond the conventional family unit to embrace semi-public domains that engage with the street. Through this process, students came to understand dwelling not as a fixed type, but as an architectural subject that can be continuously redefined in response to its time and its users.

URBAN NARRATIVE; Housing + α (Private // Public)

This graduate design studio explores new typologies of collective housing, situated in the Guro–Gasan district — an area in transition where former industrial fabric meets contemporary urban life. Rather than treating housing as a closed private domain, the studio reframes it as an urban narrative shaped by four lenses: the threshold between individual and collective (private and public), defining flexibility, the new space of technology, and urban ecology. Through typology studies of seminal housing precedents, students translated rigorous analysis into design, proposing housing models that negotiate density, openness, and the evolving relationship between dwelling and city.

Pavilion as Threshold: Architecture at the Edge

This design studio reframed the pavilion through the concept of boundary. After experimenting with space, structure, material, and light within a 250m³ volume, students situated their work on a chosen area of a layered urban building — Sewoon Sangga, the former Seoul City Hall, or the old Seoul Station. In doing so, each pavilion came to mediate the many edges where old meets new, interior meets exterior, city meets architecture, and the everyday meets the extraordinary. Students tested how a small architectural intervention can redefine the boundaries of a place, and what new spatial experiences can emerge in the in-between.
